The Junior Starlets made history at the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup by clinching their first victory on the global stage. Facing off against Mexico at the Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez, the Kenyan team showcased determination and skill, marking a memorable day for Kenyan women’s football.

Kenya took the lead early in the first half, with Valerie Nekesa opening the scoreline in the 15th minute following a well-executed play started by Joan Ogola. Their momentum continued, with Lornah Faith doubling the lead in the 36th minute, brilliantly assisted once again by Nekesa, to end the half with a 2-0 advantage.

The second half saw Mexico intensify their efforts to turn the game around. Although they managed a late goal in the 90th minute via a penalty kick by Alexa Soto, the Junior Starlets’ defense held firm, ensuring they emerged victorious with a final score of 2-1.

This historic win not only marks Kenya’s first victory at the World Cup level but also secured a third-place finish in Group C for the Junior Starlets.
