The Rise And Fall Of DJ Afro: Why He Completely Disappeared From Our Screens

The Rise And Fall Of DJ Afro: Why He Completely Disappeared From Our Screens.

James Muigai the young man born in 1985, gained fame around 2008, and this time round he was being identified as DJ Afro Amigos. He became one of the top notch movie commentators in Kenya. He changed how Kenyans were consuming movies, by translating them into Swahili and making it comical and easy for them to understand.

He became a household in Kenya and his compact discs were being sold everywhere. He dominated the industry for 10 years, despite the emergence of other movie commentators who were copying his delivery.

In 2018 things started going left. Ezekiel Mutua banned completely, the airing of DJ Afro movies in the local TV stations. This was the beginning of his fall. It took quite some time for his licence to be reinstated. He promised not to use vulgar language while explaining scenes in the movies.

His comeback wasn’t hyped that much because, Kenyans were now consuming information differently. Social media started to dominate, emergence of Tiktok and new devices, made his compact discs outdated. No one buys CDs, they prefer streaming movies online. Hence one avenue where he was getting money from was shuttered.

He had to shift to YouTube, but due to copyright issues, he wasn’t making any money from the platform, this made him to take a break. Dj Afro has been silent for 3 years now. Fans are really demanding for his comeback, they are hopeful that very soon he will be back.
