Mariga: When I Was Playing For Kenya We Used To Earn 5k Daily, Today They Earn 750 Daily.

Football legend and aspiring member of parliament , Macdonald Mariga, decided to reveal how the kenyan football has changed, ever since his reign, and since Nick Mwendwa took over the president of the federation.

Speaking in an interview at Radio 47 , Mariga said that it is true that football globally has changed, and things are really moving faster. Right now you can compare the time he was playing soccer and the current soccer style.

However to him, Harambee stars instead of moving forward, they are still stuck, and it seems that things are moving backwards. He said it is true there some improvements, but those improvements have negatively affected the welfare of players and sometimes they even lack motivation.

Mariga said that during their time, when they were called up for international duties from abroad, during the training session, they used to earn ksh. 5000 daily. Him he used to earn more than that because the players who were playing abroad were given a tip, and maybe earn about ksh.8000 daily.

However when Nick Mwendwa took over the federation, things started changing, the welfare of players was no longer a priority like before. Mariga said as at 2023, players when called for a camp, they are only paid ksh.750 daily. This cuts across all players , both who play abroad and local league.

He said that this little things are the ones that make players not to perform well. They need to be motivated, and it is up to the government to invest in football, if they want Harambee Stars to perform well. Mariga said leadership is among the key challenges that is affecting Kenya when it comes to football.
