How Martha Koome Rose From a Poor Background to Chief Justice

There is always light at the end of the tunnel. Martha Koome rose from being a daughter of a peasant in Meru to the first female chief justice in Kenya. Her Journey to success is very inspiring and she is a true reflection of success is strong will to win and determination.

Family Background of Martha Koome.

Koome was born to a peasant family in Kithiu village in Meru county. She was born in 1960, currently 62 years.
Martha grew up in rural areas in Meru in a village. She is  villager to the truest sense. Her parents were peasant farmers and they were 18 children from two mothers.

Education.

The little Martha managed to beat the odds ,and went to school despite of their huge family and how her village viewed girls back then.

by grace of God, she able to go to accomplish her primary and secondary school .She went on  graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1986,with a Bachelor’s degree in Law.

After that Koome proceeded to the Kenya School of law and attained a Postgraduate diploma in law in 1987 being admitted to the Bar as an advocate.
It was difficult for her to pursue law, because of her humble background ,and there were no role models in her village. She was very bright and she passed all her exams with distinction.

Advancing her education .

Judge Koome left Kenya to London,where she graduated with Masters in law in the year 2010,from the University of London.

Journey to Becoming the Kenya’s 1st Female Chief Justice.

Justice Koome has more than 33 years in the field of law. Before being appointed as a judge,she was appointed as a member of LSK in  1993 to 1996.

She has worked in several fields of law, Keeping in mind that she also has her own law firm.In the 2010 Constitution she played a very vital role. Her advocacy for childrens rights made her  to receive the UN award for championing childrens rights.

Beating The Odds and Becoming the 1st Female Chief Justice.

For the first time in the Kenyan history, Kenya found their first president of Judiciary to be a Female. The CV of Koome tells it all . She managed to beat all her competitors ,and inherited Maraga’s seat.

Vetting was done and Within hours of Parliament’s approval vote, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Martha Koome on May 19, 2021, as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya. She took her Oath of Office at State House, Nairobi, on May 21, 2021.

She is married early in life to her childhood sweetheart Koome Kiragu and together they have three children.

There are several departments Martha Koome has worked and they include FIDA, presiding judge in Nakuru law courts ,UNHCR and also an advocate and lawyer to several politicians in Kenya .
