Meet Evelyn Chemutai: Nick Ruto’s Wife, Career and Personal Life Away From the Limelight

Evelyn Chemutai Ruto has attracted renewed attention after photographs and details from Charlene Ruto’s traditional wedding ceremony offered Kenyans another glimpse of President William Ruto’s daughter-in-law.

Unlike several members of the First Family who are frequently seen at public events, Evelyn has largely kept away from the spotlight. Her low profile has made her one of the more private figures connected to the Ruto family.

Evelyn is married to Nick Ruto, President William Ruto’s eldest son. The couple held their traditional Kalenjin wedding ceremony, commonly known as koito, on January 15, 2022, at Windy Ridge in Karen, Nairobi. The ceremony was attended by close family members and a number of political leaders.

Evelyn is the daughter of David Baron from Laikipia County. When her marriage to Nick became public, reports noted that she was a working woman, although her specific profession and employer were not publicly disclosed.

That limited information about her career appears to be deliberate. Evelyn has not built the kind of public profile associated with politicians, influencers or celebrities. She rarely gives interviews and has generally kept details of her professional and personal life away from public discussion.

Her relationship with Nick also remained private before their wedding. The couple surprised many Kenyans when news of their traditional ceremony emerged because Nick had not publicly discussed his relationship beforehand. After the ceremony, Nick shared a message celebrating the union and thanking those who supported them.

Evelyn later became a mother. In January 2023, President William Ruto announced that he and First Lady Rachel Ruto had become grandparents following the birth of Nick and Evelyn’s first child. He thanked the people of Laikipia for giving his son a wife and said the family was grateful for the new addition.

Despite being married into Kenya’s First Family, Evelyn has continued to maintain a relatively quiet public life. She has occasionally appeared alongside Nick at important family occasions, including public celebrations and weddings involving members of the Ruto family.

Her latest appearance has once again drawn attention to her fashion and understated public image. A Nairobi fashion label, Belabkay Couture, recently confirmed that it dressed Evelyn for Charlene Ruto’s koito ceremony, describing the occasion as a momentous family event.

For now, much of Evelyn’s life remains private. Her education, exact career history, business interests and other personal details have not been consistently documented by credible public sources.

What is clear is that she has chosen a different path from other high-profile members of the First Family, keeping her work and family life largely away from public scrutiny.
