A former university lecturer who relocated to Canada has fired back at critics after a video of her cleaning a hotel bathroom went viral on TikTok.

Dressed in navy blue scrubs and a patterned headscarf, the woman was seen moving through what appeared to be a hotel bathroom with a spray bottle in one hand and a green microfibre cloth in the other.

Her relaxed demeanour, playful gestures at the camera and visible smiles suggested she had no regrets about the path she had chosen.

Rather than avoid comparisons between her former status as a lecturer and her current role, she addressed them directly through her TikTok account, @Jojo’s lifestyle.

The video made clear that financial independence mattered more to her than the opinions of strangers online.

Divine, a woman based abroad who commented on the story, offered a perspective familiar to many in the diaspora.
