Musingu High School: Where Edwin Sifuna Scored Es in Maths & Excelled in English

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has opened up about his experiences as a student at Musingu High School in Kakamega County, revealing that some subjects proved particularly difficult for him.

Sifuna joined the boys’ boarding school in 1996 and completed his secondary education in 1999. His time at the institution, however, was not without academic challenges.

The senator has previously spoken candidly about his struggles with Mathematics. He revealed that he frequently scored an E in the subject during his secondary school years.

Despite the difficulties, Sifuna managed to improve his performance and eventually achieved a C in Mathematics in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination.

He also recalled struggling with Chemistry. After scoring 16 per cent, he decided to drop the subject while in Form Two.

While Mathematics and Chemistry gave him challenges, Sifuna found greater success in subjects such as English, Kiswahili and Geography.

His strengths in these areas later influenced his career path. When university course clusters were released, he realised that his academic performance made him eligible to pursue law.

Sifuna’s journey at Musingu High School has since become an example of how struggling in particular subjects does not necessarily determine a student’s future.

The school itself has a long history of academic and sporting achievements. Its football team, known as the Scorpions, has competed strongly at national and regional levels.

Musingu has also produced notable results in hockey, rugby, handball, volleyball and basketball.

In June 2025, Sifuna returned to his former school, 26 years after completing his secondary education.

During the visit, he addressed the Form Four Class of 2025 and reflected on his journey from being a student at the institution to serving as a senator.

He described returning to Musingu and speaking to students as an emotional and memorable experience.

Sifuna’s story offers encouragement to students who may be struggling academically. His experience shows that poor performance in one subject does not have to prevent a student from succeeding.

For students facing similar challenges, his journey demonstrates the importance of identifying one’s strengths while continuing to work on areas that require improvement.
