Eldoret residents stunned after suspected phone thief returns it with apology note overnight
Residents of an estate in Eldoret were left in disbelief after a mobile phone that had been stolen earlier in the week mysteriously appeared at its owner’s doorstep accompanied by a handwritten apology note.
The incident began when a young shop attendant reported that his smartphone had disappeared during a busy evening at a small electronics shop where he works. According to colleagues, the shop had been crowded with customers, making it difficult to notice when the device went missing.
After searching the premises and questioning people who had been present, the phone could not be traced. The owner eventually accepted that the device had likely been stolen and reported the matter to nearby security officers.
However, the story took an unexpected turn just two days later.
Early in the morning, the shop attendant reportedly found his missing phone placed carefully near the entrance of his house. Next to it was a small folded paper containing a brief apology message.
Neighbours who saw the note say it simply read that the person who had taken the phone was sorry and could not keep it anymore.
The unusual return quickly spread through the neighbourhood, attracting curious residents who gathered to discuss what might have pushed the suspected thief to bring the device back.
Some residents believe the person may have been overwhelmed by guilt, while others say fear of being identified might have forced the thief to return the phone quietly.
“It is rare to see a thief return something like that without being caught,” said one resident who lives near the shop attendant.
Local elders later advised residents to remain calm and avoid speculating about who might have taken the device. They also urged people to strengthen security measures in the area.
For the shop attendant, the unexpected return of his phone has been a huge relief.
He says he never expected to see the device again and remains surprised that the person responsible chose to return it anonymously.
