Residents of a trading centre in Bungoma County were left puzzled after a suspected thief reportedly returned stolen money days after the incident, claiming that terrifying nightmares had left him unable to sleep.

The unusual incident began earlier in the week when a local trader discovered that money had disappeared from his small shop. The trader, who sells household goods and groceries, realised that a significant amount of cash was missing from his drawer shortly after closing his shop in the evening.

According to neighbours, the theft left the businessman frustrated because the missing money was meant to restock his shop.

For several days, there was no clear suspect and many people assumed the money was gone for good.However, the situation took an unexpected turn.

On Wednesday morning, a young man reportedly walked into the trader’s shop carrying an envelope containing the stolen cash. Witnesses say the man appeared nervous and repeatedly apologised before handing over the money.

People who were present claim the man admitted that he had taken the money but said he had been experiencing disturbing nightmares ever since.

“He said every night he could not sleep because he kept dreaming about the shop and the owner chasing him. He said the fear became too much,” said one customer who witnessed the moment.

The dramatic confession quickly attracted a crowd as curious residents gathered to understand what was happening. Some people were shocked that the suspect had voluntarily returned the money without being forced.Others interpreted the situation as a sign of guilt catching up with the man.

Local elders eventually intervened and urged residents not to attack the suspect, saying the most important thing was that the money had been returned to the rightful owner.

The trader later confirmed that the amount returned matched the money that had been stolen from his shop.

The incident has since sparked debate across the trading centre, with many residents discussing how guilt and fear can sometimes drive people to confess their wrongdoing.
