CAF Approves Annual Salaries for Association Presidents Amid Revenue Gains

    Summary:

CAF congress approved annual salaries of $50,000 for each association president.
CAF made $72 million in profit from the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, a significant increase from the $4 million profit in 2021.
Future revenue targets include reaching $1 billion within eight years, with plans to give each member association $1 million annually starting in 2026.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced several financial updates following its recent congress meeting. In a bid to strengthen African football’s structure, CAF will provide each association president with an annual salary of $50,000, funded by its annual contributions budget. This development is part of CAF’s strategy to expand support for its member associations amid notable increases in revenue.

The approved annual salary comes from a budget that also supports CAF’s 54-member associations. This decision follows a challenging period marked by a $50 million settlement with Lagardere Sports after the abrupt cancellation of a $1-billion marketing and media rights deal in 2019. Lagardere, having controlled CAF’s marketing rights for two decades, sued for compensation before a settlement was reached.

CAF’s financial stability has been bolstered by a $72 million profit from this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, held in Cote d’Ivoire. This profit, a vast increase from $4 million in 2021, highlights CAF’s successful revenue generation strategies, which President Patrice Motsepe attributed to effective sponsorship and planning. Motsepe further announced a projected revenue of $150 million for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, with expenses anticipated at $138.2 million.

Looking ahead, CAF aims to reach $1 billion in revenue over the next eight years. From 2026, each member association is set to receive $1 million annually, enabling further development of football programs across Africa.

CAF’s recent financial strides and commitment to annual support for association presidents signal a transformative phase for African football. Through sustained investment in both governance and grassroots development, CAF is setting a strong foundation for future growth, aiming to position African football as a formidable force on the global stage.
