Wizi Ulioniaibisha: How Villagers Caught Me After My Last Theft
My name is Peter, and there was a time when people in my village feared my name. I grew up in a poor family in western Kenya, and life was never easy. Instead of choosing honest work, I slowly drifted into crime.
At first, it was small things — stealing chickens, tools, or farm produce. I convinced myself it was just survival. But greed slowly consumed me.
Soon I began planning bigger thefts with a few friends. We targeted shops and homes at night, believing we were clever enough to never get caught.
One night, we broke into a small electronics shop and stole several phones and some cash. The robbery seemed successful. We escaped quietly and hid the stolen items.
But by morning, everything had changed.
Word had spread through the village about the theft. Angry residents began searching house by house. Somehow, they discovered our hiding place.
Within minutes, dozens of villagers surrounded our house. Their voices were loud, angry, and filled with disappointment. I had never felt fear like that before.
Instead of attacking us, the elders demanded that we confess and change our ways. Ashamed and terrified, I admitted everything.
Later, I was advised to visit a doctor known for guiding people away from destructive lifestyles. That meeting became a turning point in my life.
Today I work honestly as a mechanic. The shame of that day still lives in my memory, but it reminds me every day to never return to the path of crime.
