Do you Remember Kianjokoma Brothers, Why 6 Police Who Allegedly Killed Them Are Still Innocent

The deaths of the Kianjokoma brothers are unforgettable for most Kenyans. The two brothers were allegedly beaten to death by police officers on August 1st, 2021, during the COVID-19 period.

The brothers, who were late in returning home before the 10:00 PM curfew, are said to have been cornered by police officers on patrol. According to a witness who was with them that night, the brothers attempted to escape, but the police managed to arrest Ben and Emmanuel. The witness, however, managed to hide.

While hiding, the witness saw the police place the two brothers in the front seat of their car after they had been severely beaten. The following day, Ben and Emmanuel’s parents, worried about their sons’ whereabouts, began searching for them, only to be informed by the police that their children were dead.

The police claimed the brothers had tried to jump out of the car and tragically fell to their deaths. However, this account contradicted the autopsy report, which revealed that the brothers had died from blunt force trauma.

It also contradicted what the parents observed when they first saw their sons’ bodies in the morgue, as both had severe injuries and visible blood, clearly indicating they had been assaulted to death.

The brothers were buried on August 13th, 2021, and the quest for justice began. Six police officers who were on duty that night were arrested as key suspects:

    1. Cpl. Benson Mputhia
    2. Cpl. Consolata Kariuki
    3. PC Martin Wanyama
    4. PC Lilian Cherono
    5. PC Nicholus Sang
    6. PC James Mwaniki

A case was filed against them, and they were held in remand for three months while investigations continued. However, the six were released on November 4th, 2021, by the late Judge Ogembo, who granted them cash bail of Ksh. 3 million each.

The case was scheduled for mention in 2022, but this was delayed to 2023, and then further pushed to December 4th, 2024. Eventually, it was rescheduled for January 23rd, 2025, and since then, no new updates have emerged.

The six police officers are presumed innocent until proven guilty, meaning that, at present, no one has been jailed for the deaths of the two young men. Justice has yet to be served, and the parents remain in pain, still crying out for justice, holding on to hope that one day it will be delivered.
