The number of Kenyan women facing humiliation and harassment in Arab countries is rising alarmingly. Many have tragically lost their lives while working as housemaids in these nations. It’s difficult to grasp the full picture, as some individuals find happiness while others endure suffering. This is the heartbreaking story of Mary.

Like many others, Mary left Kenya hoping to improve her life and alleviate her family’s poverty. Unfortunately, her journey took a dark turn when she was pushed off a balcony in Riyadh, resulting in severe injuries.

Mary Wanjiru was striving to support her mother, siblings, and her three children. A friend assisted her with the paperwork, allowing her to travel to Saudi Arabia to work as a house manager or househelp.

Initially, her employer seemed kind, but after two months, the situation deteriorated, and she began to face mistreatment. Isolated from her family and friends, she was forced to cut off all connections.

Her employer withheld her first month’s salary, claiming that the agency that hired her had incurred significant expenses.

On June 17th 2021, when her boss attempted to force her into a prayer room and she refused, he pushed her from the second floor. Mary fell, hitting her head on a rock, which resulted in a broken spinal cord. In the midst of her pain, she was coerced into signing documents she couldn’t comprehend, leading to the withdrawal of her case.

While in the hospital, two Arab patients learned of her situation as a victim of domestic violence and offered their assistance. They connected her with other Kenyans living in the Gulf, who rallied together to support her.

With their help, she managed to arrange her return home, but she came back unable to walk due to her injuries.
